How Does Push Back Racking Work?

A push back racking system consists of slightly inclined horizontal rails and nesting carts. The forklift operator starts by loading a pallet onto the first cart. When they load the second pallet, the first pallet pushes back as the cart slides. This process continues until all pallets are loaded. The final pallet will rest directly on the rails. To unload the pallets, this process is reversed. As each pallet is unloaded, the one behind it slowly slides forward on the cart so that it’s accessible by the forklift.

Advantages of Push Back Racking

Push back racks can be great for a variety of industries, including food distribution, manufacturing, beverage, and more. You can use this type of racking in indoor and outdoor environments, refrigerators, or freezers. The main advantage is that you can store more pallets in your space. Because there are fewer aisles, you’ll maximize your storage potential. Other benefits include:

  • Faster loading and unloading because the carts help move the pallets
  • Decreases the chances of forklift accidents because the operators don’t have to drive into the structure
  • Improve stock rotation by storing different products on each shelf
