How Does Push Back Racking Work?

A push back racking system consists of slightly inclined horizontal rails and nesting carts. The forklift operator starts by loading a pallet onto the first cart. When they load the second pallet, the first pallet pushes back as the cart slides. This process continues until all pallets are loaded. The final pallet will rest directly on the rails. To unload the pallets, this process is reversed. As each pallet is unloaded, the one behind it slowly slides forward on the cart so that it’s accessible by the forklift.

Advantages of Push Back Racking

Push back racks can be great for a variety of industries, including food distribution, manufacturing, beverage, and more. You can use this type of racking in indoor and outdoor environments, refrigerators, or freezers. The main advantage is that you can store more pallets in your space. Because there are fewer aisles, you’ll maximize your storage potential. Other benefits include:

  • Faster loading and unloading because the carts help move the pallets
  • Decreases the chances of forklift accidents because the operators don’t have to drive into the structure
  • Improve stock rotation by storing different products on each shelf

Selective Pallet Racking Systems

Selective pallet racking provides direct access to individual pallet positions, making it one of the most versatile storage options for warehouses with numerous SKUs. Also known as single selective racking, this configuration typically places rack rows back-to-back with access aisles for forklifts and warehouse personnel.

Voss Equipment helps businesses in Harvey, IL, and throughout Greater Chicagoland select, design, and install racking around their inventory, equipment, and workflow. Contact us to discuss your warehouse and request a quote.

How Selective Pallet Racking Works

Selective pallet racking systems store loads one pallet deep. Because another pallet is not positioned in front of the stored load, operators can retrieve a specific pallet without first relocating other inventory. This direct access makes selective warehouse racking well-suited for facilities with fast product turnover, frequent picking, and a broad range of SKUs. It can also support first-in, first-out inventory practices when paired with appropriate warehouse processes.

Selective racking systems are compatible with many common forklifts. However, rack dimensions, aisle widths, lift heights, and load requirements must be coordinated with the equipment operating inside the facility.

Benefits of Selective Warehouse Racking

The right warehouse pallet racking should improve more than storage capacity. It should help people and products move through the facility more efficiently.

Key advantages of selective systems include:

  • Direct access to every pallet position
  • High selectivity for operations carrying numerous SKUs
  • Efficient picking and replenishment
  • Support for rapid inventory turnover
  • Compatibility with many standard forklifts
  • Flexible configurations for different pallet sizes and loads
  • Clear product organization and identification
  • Reduced need to move one pallet to reach another

Because selective racks require access aisles between rows, they may provide less storage density than other pallet storage systems. Operations that prioritize maximum pallet count over individual load access may want to compare drive-in pallet racking or push-back pallet racking.

Where Does Single Selective Racking Work Best?

Single selective racking is a practical choice for warehouses that need immediate access to varied inventory. Common applications include:

  • Distribution and fulfillment centers
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Food and beverage storage
  • Retail and wholesale warehouses
  • General industrial operations
  • Facilities with fast-moving products
  • Operations managing a high number of SKUs

The best warehouse racking systems depend on how inventory is received, stored, picked, and shipped. Our team can help determine whether selective industrial pallet racking offers the right balance of accessibility, capacity, and flexibility for your operation.

Planning a Selective Pallet Rack Installation

An effective racking system begins with a careful assessment of the building and daily workflow. Simply placing more warehouse storage racks into an open area may create inefficient aisles or equipment conflicts.

Before a selective pallet rack installation, important factors include:

  • Pallet dimensions and maximum load weights
  • Required pallet positions
  • Ceiling height and vertical clearance
  • Columns, doors, docks, and building obstructions
  • Forklift type, lift height, and turning radius
  • Required aisle dimensions
  • Product movement and picking frequency
  • Potential expansion or reconfiguration

Voss Equipment offers CAD drawings with complete design and engineering support. We can help plan a layout that makes practical use of vertical space while accounting for forklift travel and product flow. Our team can then assist with warehouse racking installation for the approved system.

Customers who are still comparing configurations can explore our complete selection of pallet rack storage systems. We also provide warehouse shelving solutions for supplies, cartons, and unpalletized inventory.
